Key West summer cycling is not for the faint of heart, but with a few adjustments you can still enjoy the island on two wheels. The keys are timing, hydration, and sun protection.
Ride Early or Late
The single most important rule is to avoid the midday sun. Plan rides for just after sunrise or in the hour before sunset. The air is cooler, the light is beautiful, and the streets are quieter.
Hydrate Aggressively
Key West humidity means you sweat more than you realize. Drink before you're thirsty, carry two bottles, and consider electrolyte tablets for longer rides. Coconut water is a local favorite for recovery.
Cover Up
It sounds counterintuitive, but light, breathable long sleeves and a neck gaiter can keep you cooler than bare skin. Use reef-safe sunscreen on exposed areas, and wear sunglasses.
Watch the Weather
Tropical downpours are common in the afternoon, especially from June through October. They usually pass in 20–30 minutes. If you hear thunder, get off the road and wait it out — lightning is no joke in the Keys.
Know Your Hurricane Season
June through November is hurricane season. Check the forecast before any ride, and never ride during a storm warning. After a storm, watch for debris and standing water on low-lying streets.
With a little planning, summer riding in Key West can be some of the best of the year — empty roads, gorgeous light, and that tropical breeze.
