If you're stopping in Key West on a cruise, a bike is the smartest way to see as much of the island as possible in a few hours. Here's a route that hits the highlights at a comfortable pace.
9:00 AM — Rent and Roll
Pick up a beach cruiser near the cruise port or the Historic Seaport. Take 10 minutes to adjust the seat and test the brakes.
9:30 AM — Old Town Heritage Loop
Ride through Old Town past the Hemingway Home, the Key West Lighthouse, and the Southernmost Point Buoy. About 3 miles at a leisurely pace.
10:30 AM — Coffee and Pastelitos
Stop at a Cuban coffee window for a café con leche and a pastelito. Sit in a plaza, people-watch, and refuel.
11:00 AM — Higgs Beach and White Street Pier
Ride to Higgs Beach, walk out on the White Street Pier, and enjoy the ocean breeze. About 2 miles from Old Town.
12:00 PM — Smathers Beach
Continue along South Roosevelt Boulevard to Smathers Beach. Take a swim, grab a smoothie, and relax on the sand.
1:30 PM — Fort Zachary Taylor
Ride to the western end of the island to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. Explore the historic fort and the nature trail.
3:30 PM — Mallory Square
Head back toward the port via Mallory Square. Grab a conch fritter and a souvenir.
Sunset — Mallory Square Celebration
If your ship departs late, stay for the sunset celebration. It's the quintessential Key West experience.
Return your bike, and you've seen the best of the island in a single day.
